Churchdown Club Nominated for Gloucestershire’s Top 50 Pubs 2025

We’re delighted to share some fantastic news – Churchdown Club has been nominated as one of Gloucestershire’s Top 50 Pubs for 2025 and is the only social club to be included in the competition.

Built on an ancient burial site and founded to support servicemen returning from the First World War, our club has a unique and meaningful history. A group of village veterans, led by Churchdown’s first GP, Dr Moore, raised the funds to build the club as a place of fellowship, recreation and comfort. During construction, an ancient burial ground was discovered and dedicated as a memorial to local men who did not return from the war, including Dr Moore’s eldest son. The club later served as a Home Guard and ARP Wardens post during the Second World War and has since grown into the social heart of the community.

Our manager, Churchdown resident Charlotte Nourse, said:

We really are a hidden gem in the centre of the village. New customers are always welcomed with a smile, and people often comment on the warmth, atmosphere and sense of community when they visit for the first time.

Sports and activities are a big part of club life, with a bowls green, tennis courts, pétanque area, skittle alley, sports bar, pool table, darts board and function room. We host monthly live music, quizzes and festivals throughout the year, including cider, blues, ale and Oktoberfest, as well as a regular folk club, U3A groups, Brownies, skittles leagues, holiday clubs and paint-and-sip parties.

Behind the bar, top sellers include real ale, Madri and wine. We offer four real ale taps, always including Wye Valley Butty Bach and three guest ales, alongside local gins, lagers and stout. We also serve fresh crusty rolls filled with classic favourites and traditional bar snacks.

When you walk into the club for the first time, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome. We’re proud to support local suppliers and to offer a safe, welcoming community space for everyone.

Being named Gloucestershire’s top pub would mean a great deal to everyone involved.

It would mean the absolute world to win, Since coming out of Covid, the club is thriving again. This award would also help us promote our fundraising to improve our facilities and make the club more accessible to all. We’re proud to honour our past, thrive in the present and build a future where the next generation love the club just as much as those before them.

Thank you to all our members, volunteers and visitors for your continued support.
