Just over a week ago, we were incredibly proud to be awarded Gloucester Area CAMRA Club of the Year by CAMRA — a prestigious recognition celebrating the quality, care and consistency we put into serving excellent real ales to our members and guests.

The award was presented by Peter Bennetts, Area and County Coordinator and Chair, who praised the club for its strong community spirit, welcoming atmosphere and commitment to high standards.

In his speech, Peter highlighted that CAMRA’s Club of the Year awards are about far more than what is in the glass. They recognise venues that combine outstanding beer quality with warmth, character and a genuine role at the heart of their local community. He described Churchdown Club as a deserving winner that delivers on all fronts — from beautifully kept beer and thoughtful choice, to the friendly environment created by staff, volunteers, committee members and loyal supporters.

Peter also explained the wider significance of the award. Club and pub winners across the Mid Gloucestershire branch — including areas such as Gloucester, the Forest of Dean, Cirencester, Dursley and Stroud — are judged against one another before progressing to county, regional and national stages of the competition. Recent years have seen Gloucestershire venues perform strongly on the national stage, highlighting the strength of the local real ale scene.

He recognised that clubs like Churchdown thrive through the dedication of many people — those behind the bar, the cellar team who ensure every pint is served at its best, volunteers who give their time, and members who continue to support the club as a social hub for events, sports, entertainment and community life. The annual beer festival held each May was also highlighted as a key example of the club’s commitment to celebrating real ale and bringing people together.

This award means a great deal to us and belongs to everyone who supports the club. We would like to thank all our members, guests, staff and volunteers for helping make Churchdown Club such a welcoming place to enjoy a great pint and great company.
